I am Florence Phillips, founder of the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Through passion and commitment, I built the core of the museum’s collection, which you are about to discover in the rooms of this exhibition.
I have always loved my native country of South Africa, though I spent most of my life in England. As such, my first exposure to art was through the British masters of the 18th century and the artists of the Victorian age. The first room of our tour is dedicated to the Anglo-Saxon milieu of the 19th century, from the Romanticism of Turner to the fascinating world of the Pre-Raphaelites.
