INTRO SECTION THE 20TH CENTURY
I have never appreciated modern art. My taste stops at Impressionism. By the time I founded my museum, Picasso had already painted his Demoiselles d’Avignon and Matisse had long since introduced Fauvism… but neither I nor Hugh Lane chose to pay it any heed. The works of the 20thcentury only entered the collections of the Art Gallery later, thanks to new donations and astute acquisitions by subsequent directors of the Museum. Today the collection boasts works by important 20th-century figures, from both the historical avant- garde and the more recent developments in Europe and the United States.
